New Postpaid Plans

Postpaid plans have also seen a price hike. The Rs 299 plan, previously offering 30GB of data, is now priced at Rs 349. The Rs 399 plan, which included 75GB of data, is now priced at Rs 449.

Introduction of New Applications

Alongside the tariff hikes, Jio is introducing two new applications:

  • JioSafe: A quantum-secure communication app for calling, messaging, and file transfers, priced at Rs 199 per month.
  • JioTranslate: An AI-powered multi-lingual communication app for translating voice calls, messages, text, and images, priced at Rs 99 per month.

Jio users can use these applications for free for the first year.

Industry Impact and Reactions

The telecom industry has witnessed its first significant tariff hike in approximately 30 months. This move by Reliance Jio, with price increases ranging from 12% to 25%, is expected to enhance the telco’s monthly average revenue per user (Arpu), which had stagnated at Rs 181.7 for three quarters until March 2024. Historically, India’s telecom Arpu has been among the lowest globally.

Jio’s latest tariff increase could trigger a domino effect among other major private-sector telcos in India, such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Although these companies have not yet announced any tariff changes, industry sources suggest similar hikes may be on the horizon.

Impact on 5G Adoption

As of April-end, Jio holds a 40.48% share of wireless subscribers in India, with 472.42 million of the 1.16 billion total mobile phone connections in the country. The tariff increase is expected to influence the pace of 5G adoption. Both Jio and Airtel have offered 5G services at 4G prices, and Jio had 108 million 5G customers at the end of the fourth quarter (January-March) of 2024-25, while Airtel had 72 million subscribers.

JioBharat and JioPhones

Users of JioBharat and JioPhones will continue to enjoy existing tariffs. Jio remains committed to providing affordable digital services to feature phone users. The company launched the new JioBharat phone in July 2023, priced at Rs 999, aiming to empower the 250 million feature phone users in India still using 2G services.

Statement from Jio’s Leadership

Akash M Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, stated, “The introduction of new plans is a step towards industry innovation and driving sustainable growth through investments in 5G and AI technology. High-quality, affordable internet is essential for Digital India, and Jio is proud to contribute to this vision. We will continue to prioritize our country and customers by investing in India.”
